I need to add my feelings to that of my fellow librarian, Susan. Kurt Vonnegut, humanist and novelist, has passed away at the age of eighty-four. Author of nineteen works, a vocal opponent of the war in Iraq, a lover of libraries and librarians. He spoke eloquently and peacefully, and advocated much that is admirable in his work and his talks. One of the things that he said, "Teaching is friendship," (which NPR also mentioned in their piece on him this morning) is a wonderful quote that I must tell my husband, the science teacher. Here's to a well-lived life. I will miss you, Mr. Vonnegut.
