Golden Spike Celebration

Tomorrow the Golden Spike National Historic Site will hold the annual re-enactment of the Golden Spike. The weather looks great so it will be an exceptional day to experience all the activities going on at the Spike. Entrance will be free tomorrow. The visitor center opens at 9 a.m. and at 9:30 the trains will arrive. The commemorative program begins at 11:30 with volunteers in period costume. At 12:20 and 2 p.m. there will be the re-enactment of the driving of the Golden Spike. Check the Golden Spike Historic site website for more information.

The library carries quite a few books on the history of the race to build the transcontinental railroad. Some of those include: "Hear that Lonesome Whistle Blow" by Dee Brown; "Westward to Promontory" a pictorial documentary by Barry Combs; "Rails East to Promontory: the Utah Stations" by the Bureau of Land Management; "Iron Trail to the Golden Spike" an oldie but goodie by John Stewart; "A Great and Shining Road " by John Williams. A couple of titles by David Bain are "The Old Iron Road" and "Empire Express"; and, of course, Stephen Ambrose's "Nothing like it in the World". Two children's books are "Full Steam Ahead" by Rhoda Blumberg and "Ten Mile Day" by Mary Ann Fraser.
