Upstairs at the Library

Many parents stop at the bottom of the stairs and tell their children they can't go upstairs because there are no books for children there. Many older people look at the stairs and don't want to attempt it even though there is access by elevator. So, it is a lonely place at the top where I sit as reference librarian. I want to encourage people to come up and see this original part of the Carnegie Library and the only section where the beautiful stained glass windows reside.

We do have many children's books in this area. All the non-fiction books for children, except the biographies and the fairy tales, live upstairs. Children's books are shelved with the adult books, but you can tell they are a children's book because the spine tag will have an "x" in front of the number. Some of the shelves are too tall for a child, but I'd be glad to help them find a book or we can pull over a step stool. If a child wants to learn how to take care of an animal, cook, garden, make a craft or science project, learn a joke or a new game this is the place to come.

All of the new children's books start out in the children's department "NEW" section before they move upstairs. They are nice and handy so you can get a look at the new books being purchased for children.
Hopefully, that will entice you to come upstairs and visit some of your favorite non-fiction children's books.
Susan
