What is the Post Office thinking?

Today I came to work and saw a note on our bulletin board that says if we have any packages to mail that weigh over 12 ounces, we have to take them to the post office, the carrier will no longer pick them up. I thought that, perhaps, our letter carrier had a bad back and couldn't lift over 12 ounces. I find out that it all has to do with the new postal regulations for envelopes that are different sizes and, therefore, different rates. It is amusing that I had just been to the post office for personal reasons earlier in the week and asked the clerk how I could estimate what a legal sized envelope might cost to mail. I had hoped to put my own postage on without standing in line to have it weighed. After a (seemingly) ten minute explanation and demonstration on how to measure the envelope with plastic templates the envelope has to fit through for thickness, I admitted defeat and said I would just have to stand in line again next time. Now it appears, that I will also be standing in line each day to mail our interlibrary loans back to their respective libraries.
