Its that time of year again when the magazines for the new year start coming in. That means making room for them in our magazine room which can be a daunting chore sometimes. Since we didn't get the new library, I splurged and bought 400 new boxes to put the magazines in. The library is about as frugal as anywhere around and the boxes we've been using have been here for as long as I've been using this library - which is about 30 years.
We've always kept five years of back issues of each magazine we subscribe to so they can be used for research and reports - that means each magazine takes up a lot of room. My job this month is to take out all the 2002 magazines and sort them to be recycled or to go into storage for our book sale. I then have to re-label all the boxes and shift the 2002 boxes to become 2008 boxes. Because we're getting new boxes this year, I'll have to re-label and move every magazine.
You'll be looking for some bright exciting boxes now that I've mentioned it, but even boxes can be expensive. Ordering the cheapest durable box I could find, it will cost about $1 a box or $400 total and you probably won't even notice the difference.
We're always trying to keep our magazine collection current with the desires of our patrons, though many don't even realize we have magazines or they suggest we purchase ones we already have. Look for these new magazines at the library this year: Everyday with Rachel Ray, , Popular Photography, Teen Vogue, Looney Tunes, and some new Spanish language magazines: Automundo, Siempre Mujer, and Tv Y Novelas.
