I just read in the Public Libraries magazine about a program that Amazon is now offering. It is called the First Loan program and librarians can use it to create a list of high-demand books that can be purchased by patrons through a special Amazon Wish List. The patron can then donate the book to the library knowing that they are meeting an immediate and specific need for that library. Books purchased through this wish list would be mailed directly to the library. The library would place a sticker in the book to let future readers know it was a gift. Once the book was cataloged and ready to go, the person who purchased the book would be notified that the book was ready for them to read. In addition, the donation would be tax deductible. It will be interesting to see how it works and how many libraries will use it.
