As the designated "obituary" writer, I am once again behind the times. I heard the end of a newscast the other day and only heard the name "Clarke" and "writer" had passed away. I thought I'd see something in the newspaper but I must have missed that also. So, today I took a minute to look and I see that it was Arthur C. Clarke, most widely known for his science fiction books and screen writer for the movie 2001.
Mr. Clarke was British and had been living in Sri Lanka since 1956. He had been battling debilitating post-polio syndrome for years. He died March 19th, 2008. He was a visionary author who had written more than 100 books on space, science and the future. He was also credited with the concept of communications satellites in 1945, decades before they became a reality. Some of his best-known books (which we carry at our library) are: Childhood's End, Rendezvous with Rama, Imperial Earth, and Songs of Distant Earth.
Mr. Clarke would often write three books a year and at the time of his death he was working on a novel entitled "The last theorem".
