Alexander McCall Smith

Alexander McCall Smith, author of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and the Isabel Dalhousie series, will be in Ogden at the Ogden Eccles Conference Center on September 30th. The tickets are $70, $90, and $120. A little expensive for most of us. There are $10 tickets, if you wish to see him speak a the Ogden High School assembly at 10 a.m. I hear there is a waiting list for this already. Alexander lives in Edinburgh, Scotland now but he was born and educated in Zimbabwe. His inspiration for the main character, Precious Ramotswe, in the AgenNo. 1 Ladies Detective Agency was a real Botswanan woman he'd observed years earlier. HBO will air the BBC series next year. The two-hour pilot was filmed on location in Botswana under the direction of the late Anthony Minghella who also directed "Cold Mountain" and "The English Patient.
