It's that time again when the magazines for the new year start coming in and we have to find a place for them in the magazine room. This can be a time-consuming project because one year has to be removed to make room for the new year and a lot of boxes have to be relabeled. I also have to decide what magazines to keep for the book sale and which magazines go to be recycled. We don't have storage to keep every magazine for the sale. Magazines dealing with current issues like Time, Newsweek, PC World, Fortune don't sell very well at the sale.
Our library has always tried to keep 5 years worth of magazines for research, but times are changing and we now have databases on the computer which are easier and quicker to use. We are trying to decide how to use our space more efficiently and in that effort, we are cutting down the magazines we are keeping. At this point, I am working to get them narrowed down to 3 years worth of each magazine. This means a lot of magazines going in to the sale. Many of them are going on the current Friends sale rack and even more will be available at our annual book sale. The sale will be in the spring this year due to the earthquake proofing of the library. We'll keep you informed about that.
