I've found another Inspector I like. Inspector Montalbano from Sicily has a sly wit and a keen understanding of human nature. As the cover of the book-on-cd "The Terra-Cotta Dog" tells us, "Montalbano is a detective whose earthiness, compassion, and imagination make him totally irresistible." The author, Andrea Camilleri, lives in Rome and his books have been translated into eight languages. After reading so many children's books, it was a total change to visit the rough world of Montalbano and the Mafiioso complete with bad language and sexual situations. Inspector Montalbano is definitely a guy's guy. Our library does not have any other titles by Andrea Camilleri so I'll have to find them on netlibrary or get them interlibrary loan. "The Terra-Cotta Dog" stands on its own, but it seems Inspector Montalbano's character has a history before and after this title.

As an aside, I decided to find more information on Andrea Camilleri and I find that he is considered one of the greatest Italian writers of both the 20th and 21st centuries! His Montalbano books were made into a tv series in Italy. Ten million copies of his novels have been sold to date and he is becoming increasing popular in the UK and North America. Camilleri seems like quite the character himself, and it says he is madly in love with cigarettes and smoking.
