Dr. Daniel J. McInerney, Department of History, Utah State University, will be speaking on the topic "Did Lincoln Really Free the Slaves?" on Thursday, April 30th at 7 p.m. Dr. McInerney will be asking a simple question: Who freed the slaves? Some look to the Emancipation Proclamation as the answer to that question; some point instead to the 13th Amendment of the Constitution;; some concentrate on military officers and their role in bringing freedom; some think the answer rests in Congress and its legislation during the war. But historians over the past twenty years have posed a quite different answer , one that almost always comes as a surprise to those in the audience. And the answer to the question of "who freed the slaves" tells us quite a bit about how "history" has been done in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
Lecture is free and open to the pulbic. Brigham City Library 26 East Forest. at 7 pm. Thursday April 30th, 2009.
