Is this and Alien Planet?

Hollywood Moviemaking in Utah

by Michele, Children's Librarian

The librarians attended the Utah Library Associations conference in May held in Provo Utah. The conference featured speaker James D'Arc of BYU presenting an illustrated tour of moviemaking in Utah.

From Drums Along the Mohawk starring Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert in 1939, to Galaxy Quest starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman in 1999 Utah has been the site to many Hollywood hits. Other movies made in Utah include: The Greatest Story ever Told 1965, Planet of the Apes in 1968, and The Outlaw Josey Wales 1975. Even the television program the Lone Ranger and the movie on the same title in 1956 were filmed in Utah.

The area near Kanab, Utah was known as Little Hollywood and was widely used in film until the 1970's. With the death of the western this use has steadily declined until the present day. Utah's film industry is still a vibrant scene however, and you can check it out on the website of the Utah Film Commission. The best part of the website is where you can check out films that have been filmed in Utah the address is http://film.utah.gov/apps/shot_in_utah/ .
