"The truth about food" is the companion book tied to a major five-part television series of the same name hosted by Dr. Mehmet C. Oz, the best selling coauthor of "You: The owner's Manual". I thought the series might be over as it aired in September of 2007, but it looks that you can catch it again on the Discovery Channel starting May 14th at 8 and 11 pm. Check the Discovery Channel website at http://health.discovery.com/convergence/truth/truth.html for a listing of dates and times.
"The truth about food" is like a quick run through some rumors, myths, and truths you've heard recently about how what we eat affects our health. They've run some experiments on people to help backup their ideas but it seems that most of their trials had to be done fast and weren't always conclusive. I thought the section on how food moves through our body was pretty interesting and the pros and cons of probiotics and prebiotics since that's really in the news these days. They gave two truckers a pill to see how long it took it to go through their systems with their normal diet and then again after they'd added more fiber to their diet . Guess when the pill went through faster...
It was also interesting to know that broccoli is good for us, but it doesn't work the same for all of us. Some people have to eat a lot more than others for it to do any good. And spinach - if you cook it longer than 4 minutes or if its been longer than nine days since it was picked, you've lost all its healthy benefits. So what does that say about spinach in the grocery store - how long did that take to get to us? You get more benefits from some vegetables by eating them with some fat - did you know that? All that work to eat healthy and you could be doing it wrong!
