Merle's Door

Summer must be here, I'm going through books like crazy this month. Or maybe its because I've hit several good ones in a row. Dog books are usually a good read and I've read several of them. The latest is "Merle's Door" by Ted Kerasote. I can only say, you'd certainly want to be Ted's dog if you were a dog. Ted lived in Kelly, Wyoming next to the Tetons when he wrote this book. In Kelly, you don't have to leash your dog and every dog there got to wander freely, especially Merle. I got bogged down a bit in some of the more scholarly parts of the book where Ted talks about the first dogs, the synaptic kiss, dog training, and how dogs think; I rather browsed over those. I did like the parts where Ted writes about his personal relationship with Merle.

Ted is one of those passionate dog lovers that takes his dog wherever possible and where, it seems, the dog is almost another person. As a single person, it seems his best relationships are with his dog or someone else who is truly into their dog. Ted seems to be a true adventurer and he takes Merle along - hiking, biking, skiing, hunting. The last chapters really rope you in and shouldn't be read on your lunch hour unless you want to go back to work with puffy eyes.
