So Brave, Young, and Handsome

I gave this book a chance because it got great reviews and I liked Leif Enger's last book "Peace like a river". I really enjoyed "So brave, young, and Handsome" and I can't put my finger on the exact reason why! It was another book with short little chapters that make you think "well, that was short, I can just read another couple of chapters" and on and on you go. I would compare it to a western and I see other reviews say the same, but that doesn't quite explain it either.

"So Brave, Young and Handsome" is set in the West in 1915 with the colorful characters traveling from Minnesota to California and many stops in between. It is rife with train robbers, cowboys, sharpshooters and Pinkerton detectives. It is a rugged and nimble story about an aging train robber on a quest to reconcile the claims of love and judgment on his life, and the failed writer who goes with him. You can listen to the author read a selection from the book at NPR's site http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=91368372
