From My Point of View - Book Review

Book Cover

Being Teddy Roosevelt
is a wonderful little read. It's a children's chapter book with a lot of humor and packed with very, very fun kids for characters. I bought a copy of this book for myself so I could take it to a book signing. It was definitely money well spent.

It's about a fourth-grade boy named Riley O'Rourke and he has two MAJOR problems.

#1 - He has to attend a biography tea, and in costume.

#2 - He really, really wants to learn to play the saxophone, but he has to find a way to get an instrument (which he can't afford) AND he has to convince his mom that he can learn an instrument and improve on the rest of his school work at the same time.

Riley and his friends introduce readers to several historical figures throughout the book, including: Teddy Roosevelt (of course), Mahatma Gandhi, Queen Elizabeth I, and Helen Keller. Riley's report is on Teddy Roosevelt. As he struggles through the obstacles that he runs into on both of his problems, he learns from Roosevelt's example.

Being Teddy Roosevelt is a fun and engaging story for kids - and, um, me too.

The author, Claudia Mills, has several other books out too. I've also read 7 x 9 = Trouble. It was also really cute. Last night I read the first chapter of Perfectly Chelsea and it sounds like it will be a really cute one as well.

A few her books are listed below:

Riley O'Rourke is writing his report on President Teddy Roosevelt in preparation for the fourth-grade biography tea, but he has a far more important goal: to get a saxophone so he can take instrumental music. His mother can't afford to rent him a sax, and he's sure he'll never save up enough money to buy one. But as Riley learns more about Roosevelt's "bully" spirit, he realizes that there just might be a way to solve his problem after all.
This sparkling story about the influence of important historical figures is enhanced by tender, insightful illustrations.
