Toys for Christmas

I always have a hard time thinking of gifts for my grandchildren. I want to get them something I know they'll enjoy and that they'll play with for awhile. The Better Homes and Gardens, December 2008 issue, suggest some websites that evaluate toys and children's media. Toys that are simple, yet spark a child's imagination are the toys that last the longest.

http://toyportfolio.com/platinumawards/ Oppenheim Toy Portfolio has "Best Toy" awards for products in age categories from infants to later school years.

Parents magazine http://www.parents.com/ and http://www.goodyblog.com/ are both packed with the latest information about toys and games for the whole family.

Teachers Resisting Unhealthy Children's Entertainment is a nonprofit group with toy-shopping strategies and tips for children's entertainment at http://truceteachers.org/

Of course, I always like to give books and it's hard to choose from the thousands that come out every year. A good place to start would be with a list of Newbery books which have won awards in American literature for children. Find a list at http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/newberymedal/newberymedal.cfm

(Whew! sorry that one is so long - you can also just do a google search for "Newbery medal" +ALA.
