The Cabinet of Wonders

The Cabinet of Wonders by Marie Turkoski. I wish I was better at writing a review of a book. I seem to say the same things over and over, "It was a fun little book", "I really liked it", and that is exactly what I want to say about this one. I just finished the author's note at the end which made the book even more special because she tells how she based the book around the European Renaissance at the end of the sixteenth century, and some of her characters are based on actual people. I don't read a lot of fantasy, but I thought the story was rather unique and imaginative. She writes of metal animals, almost real, who drink a special oil as food; special powers of mind-reading; invisible long fingers; eyes that can be exchanged for others; a clock that might control the weather... The author explains that there really were cabinet of wonders and they were originally a piece of furniture meant to display odd, beautiful objects. Sometimes the cabinet would get so full, they had to get another and another until they filled an entire room; these became what we now call a museum! Don't we learn something new every day! This book is the first of The Kronos Chronicles. The author's website is at http://www.marierutkoski.com/about
