Domain Names

I hadn't thought much about the domain names of Internet sites and didn't realize that they expire. It was interesting to read in today's Standard Examiner that the Bush Library Foundation (http://www.georgewbushlibrary.com/) allowed their domain name to expire, and they had to pay $35,000 to get it back! I bet whoever was in charge of that little chore of renewing the domain name is in big trouble, or maybe it is a chore that just fell through the cracks and was no one person's fault. What a lot of money! A web developer paid $5 for the domain name when he found it by searching lists of expiring domain names. To find out more about domain names, I checked Wikipedia which says to get an original domain name, the end-user registers either directly with a registrar, or indirectly through one or more layers of resellers. As of 2008, the cost generally ranges from a low of about $7.50 per year to about $35 per year. The maximum period of registration of a domain name is generally 10 years.
