Storytime Review

It's Raining & Pouring @ the Library!

We began our storyhour this week with a fun game of balloon volleyball. Each mom blew up a balloon for their child and tossed or bounced it across the yarn I had strung up between two poles as a net. The children loved the balloons and playing with their mom.
This week our theme was about rain and wind. We read A Rainy Day by Lola Schafaer, Raindrop Plop! by Wendy Lewison, I face the Wind by Vicki Cobb, Who likes Rain? by Wong Herbert Lee, and Puddles by Jonathan Londan. After reading about wind in Vicki Cobb's book we experimented with making the "wind" with a blow dryer. We moved a balloon, feather, paper towel, hair, paper cup, styrofoam ball and a leaf. We weren't as successful moving things like rocks. It was fun to watch the kids as the items blew around the room and we talked about how strong the wind is.

We did the baby ducky countdown from the Sticky bubble gum CD by Carole Peterson and waddled like ducks. We sang It's Raining, it's Pouring and water color painted a picture of a child with an umbrella. My favorite activity of the entire class was when we listened to the CD Sounds of Water. The children tried to guess what type of water we were listening to. The ocean, babbling brook, rowboat on a lake, and rainstorm are the four tracks featured on the CD. I left the track playing rainstorm while we read one of the books and it added to the atomosphere of falling, dripping wet rainy stories.

Next weeks theme: Springtime (Iwill be optimistic that the weather will cooperate!)
