What Publishers Are Looking for in New Authors

Shadow Mountain Publishing specializes in fiction for children and teens as well as romance, mystery, and general fiction for adults. They also publish inspirational nonfiction and a handful of biographies and seasonal titles. Mangum's presentation will highlight the four things we look for in a new author: Creativity, Vision, Flexibility, and Passion.

Lisa Mangum has loved and worked with books ever since elementary school, when she volunteered at the school library during recess. Her first paying job was shelving books at the Sandy Library. She worked for five years at Waldenbooks while she attended the University of Utah, graduating with honors with a degree in English. An avid reader of all genres, she has worked in the publishing department for Deseret Book since 1997. Besides books, Lisa loves movies, sunsets, spending time with her family, trips to Disneyland, and vanilla ice cream topped with fresh raspberries. She is the acquisitions editor at Shadow Mountain and author of The Hourglass Door Trilogy and After Hello. Lisa lives in Taylorsville with her husband, Tracy.

8 January 2013 - Author Event: Jordan Arey Author Jordan Arey will be at the Brigham City Library on Tuesday, 8 January 2013 at 7 p.m. to discuss his book and his writing. A book signing will follow. Jordan Arey is a local Utah author who’s just had his debut novel published, a work of literary fiction known as POWERS OF INFLUENCE. On November 25, 2012 will we celebrate the release of this much-anticipated debut novel from Jordan Arey. From his earliest years Jordan Arey wanted to understand who he was, why he was, how things worked, and for what purpose. He passed through a childhood stage of eager questioning, riddling his parents with countless inquiries. He can remember the repetition of a certain phrase from his father as a child: “Why all the questions? Are you writing a book?” he would ask. Well, he wasn’t then, but he can see now that all his questioning was preparing his mind to do so later. After high school, Jordan turned to further studies in his faith and attended an institute of religion from which he graduated. During this time, he practiced writing essays on varying subjects to establish his style and voice in the written word. A short time later, he left on a two year ecclesiastical mission that lent greater insight and understanding to the subjects of his work. Matthew Kirby to Visit BCPL

Children’s author Matthew Kirby will be visiting the Brigham City Library to discuss his books, Icefall and The Clockwork Three. The event will take place on Wednesday, October 17th 2012 at 7 p.m.  A book signing will follow.

Matthew Kirby was the 2012 winner of the Edgar Award in the Juvenile mystery category. The Edgar is an award presented by the Mystery Writers of America for outstanding work in the mystery genre. Visit Matthew's website at www.matthewkirby.com.

Foodie Fiction with Josi Kilpack on Tuesday Night

Tuesday, 16 October 2012 at 7 p.m. in the library's basement.

Josi Kilpack is currently writing a culinary mystery series and will discuss how the recipes work into the plot, which comes first the title recipe or the story that goes with it, and how other authors have made it work. Both readers and writers will find this class educational and satisfying in more ways than one. The event will take place on Tuesday, October 16th 2012 at 7 p.m.  There will be samples of some of the recipes in her books. A book signing will follow.

Big Rigs and Long Hitches: Freighting in the Old West - Michael Zimmer

In Big Rigs and Long Hitches: Freighting in the Old West, Western Author Michael Zimmer will discuss his research for the novel The Long Hitch, a Western/Mystery set in Corinne, Utah, and along the Utah to Montana Road in the 1870s. Zimmer will share stories and period art on the hazards and humor to be found along the Western trails, from cantankerous mules and rowdy oxen, to prairie fires and Indian raids. The event will take place on Tuesday, October 9th 2012 at 7 p.m.  A book signing will follow.
