What Publishers Are Looking for in New Authors

Tuesday, 19 April 2016, 7 p.m. 

Shadow Mountain Publishing specializes in fiction for children and teens as well as romance, mystery, and general fiction for adults. They also publish inspirational nonfiction and a handful of biographies and seasonal titles. Mangum's presentation will highlight the four things we look for in a new author: Creativity, Vision, Flexibility, and Passion.

Lisa Mangum has loved and worked with books ever since elementary school, when she volunteered at the school library during recess. Her first paying job was shelving books at the Sandy Library. She worked for five years at Waldenbooks while she attended the University of Utah, graduating with honors with a degree in English. An avid reader of all genres, she has worked in the publishing department for Deseret Book since 1997. Besides books, Lisa loves movies, sunsets, spending time with her family, trips to Disneyland, and vanilla ice cream topped with fresh raspberries. She is the acquisitions editor at Shadow Mountain and author of The Hourglass Door Trilogy and After Hello. Lisa lives in Taylorsville with her husband, Tracy.

Elizabeth Mueller will share her experiences with networking, the importance of, and how it can boost with your writing career!

Elizabeth started writing poetry when she was 9, but always enjoyed illustrating stories as a way to escape the problems in her home. As a teen, she wrote your everyday-angst poetry, but her senior year was her first step into novel-writing. She finished that book 8 years later and hasn’t stopped since! It was when she decided to join social networks that her writing became career-oriented. In June of 2009, she started her blog and joined Facebook for the fun of it, unknowingly taking the first huge step toward social networking--since then, she’s spread out to Twitter and other networks as well! Utah Author to Speak About the Old West and His Writing Tonight at the Library

Writing the West: Pitfalls in Research presented by Michael Zimmer

In “Writing the West: Pitfalls in Research”, Western novelist Michael Zimmer will discuss some of the tricks he's learned over the years on researching the American West for fiction and non-fiction. He'll cover topics as diverse as starting a fire with flint and steel, details on handling a 20-mule freight outfit, and common misconception about Old West firearms – all with an emphasis on avoiding the familiar stereotypes learned from Hollywood.

Michael Zimmer has been a selling author since 1978, with both fiction, non-fiction, and photo features published in magazines as diverse as Easyriders and Muzzleloading. He has had eight novels published to date. His latest, The Long Hitch, was released from Five Star Westerns in 2011. Join us Tuesday, 19 April 2011 at 7 p.m. for Lisa Mangum's presentation, "Finding Your Voice: Opening the Door to Your Imagination", a 45-minute presentation on sparking creativity, finding good ideas, and understanding the basic building blocks of writing a novel (characters, conflict, plot, and developing your voice as an author). As an example, she discusses the writing process she used to write The Hourglass Door and The Golden Spiral, the first two books in a trilogy featuring the love story between Abby, a senior in high school, and Dante, an Italian foreign-exchange student who has been sent forward in time through a time machine crafted by the legendary Leonardo da Vinci.

Tonight Vicki will lead a discussion on pacing and description which will feature examples submitted by writing group members. You do not need to have submitted a page to attend and participate in the discussion. Pages will be part of the discussion and were selected by the authors who wrote them to represent a portion of their manuscripts which dealt in some way with tension, pacing, description and/or setting. Pages will be projected for the group to see during the discussion.

Victoria Ramirez, Ph.D., is a professor in the English Department at Weber State University where she teaches creative writing and specializes in the novel. She has led several other discussions for the BCPL Writing Group and her presentations are full of energy, inspirational, and educational.
