This Morning at the Library - Summer Reading Sign-ups

We were very busy this morning at the library. Moms, Dads and grandparents lined up with their children and grandchildren to sign-up for summer Reading. There was hardly a parking spot to be found. The line started around 8:30 this morning and continued to grow. When the library opened its doors at 10:00 patrons were directed to sign-ups in the auditorium and over the first hour many more people came in to join the crowd of readers. Thanks to the planning efforts of our children's librarians, people were directed to the sign-up lines they wanted and were able to sign-up for their Storytime and/or Read-At-Home fairly quickly before they moved upstairs to start collecting the first reads for the summer.


We'd like to extend a special thank you to the volunteers who helped make this morning's sign-ups a success.


Sign-ups for Storytime will continue as long as space is available and Read-At-Home sign-up is available any time from now until July 31st. Find out more about our Children's Programming or read the Rules for the Read-at-Home program.

Avoid Summer Brain Drain!

Did your child's brain shrink last summer? Probably not, but it may have shifted into reverse, according to a study at the University of Missouri-Columbia. The study found that when students return to school after a long summer vacation, they've lost one to three months worth of learning. Like water flowing from a bathtub.

What can you do? Parents can help kids retain educational skills, try some of the following:

1. Keep lots of books around and make regular trips to the library.

2. Think of ways to sneak educational activities into your summer routine, visit museums, art galleries, planetariums, aboretums, state and national historic sites and national historic parks.

3. Consider summer tutoring, summer school, or summer day-camps. Struggling kids can catch up and those who aren't struggling can accelerate learning in areas that interest them.

4. Join the summer Read-at-Home program at our library! Kids read for 20 minutes a day and get the rewards of keeping their skills. They are also rewarded with fun prizes for every page they complete in their summer reading booklets.

The theme for Summer Reading this year is:

"Get a Clue @ your Library"

The Summer Read-at-Home program is open to kids ages 3-17, it is open to residents and non-residents of Brigham City. You do not need a library card to participate. The cost is only $1.00 to keep your kids reading all summer long!

Registration will begin on Tuesday, June 5th and will be on-going during the summer. Prize days and raffle drawings will be held August 8-10th. For more info. stop by the library and talk with one of our staff.

Summer Story Time
Registration is on June 5th. Cost of the six-week session is $1.00. Fun stories, activities, games, music and crafts for kids ages 3-9. Classes available will be Tuesdays or Wednesdays at 10:00 or 11:30. Classes fill quickly so register early. Tuesday classes will not be held on July 24th. Wednesday classes will not be held on July 4th.


Summer Read-at-Home Program
This program is for children ages 2-17. Children keep track of the number of minutes that they read and can earn prizes when they complete a page in their reading booklets. Cost for the program is $1.00. Registration for this program begins on Tuesday June 5th.

An Insiders Tip on Registration:
Those in the know will tell you that these are both very popular programs. On the morning of Tuesday June 5th we will expect a line of moms and kids waiting for registration to begin. So plan on coming early that day, before the library opens, to get a spot in line. The line up is for our limited number of Story Time spots. If your child is not registering for Story Time you can register for the Read-at-Home program later in the day, and not wait in a long line. This year there will be more spots available in Story Time because we will be having 2 sessions simutaneously, one for children age 3-5 and another for children 6-9. We hope that we can accomodate everyone who wants to participate!
