Holiday Books and NieNieDialogues.blogspot.com

It is such a fun season to purchase new books because there are so many out there now on crafts, decorating, entertaining, and cooking for the holidays. Who has time to do all those things? It is great to look through all the ideas and think you might accomplish it; I am sure some people do (but not me).
Today I put a book into the collection "Holiday" written with Matthew Mead and one of the chapters includes crafts and recipes from Stephanie Nielson of Utah. Some of you might know her from her blog http://nieniedialogues.blogspot.com/   Stephanie and her husband were involved in a near-fatal airplane crash in 2008 which burned 80% of her body. Her blog enabled her friends and family to follow her long journey back to recovery. Her scars may never heal, but Stephanie says it gets a little easier every day. Despite constant physical pain, she still manages to make lunches, bathe her children and celebrate life and love (and work as contributing lifestyle editor for "Holiday"). Take a look at a few of the wonderful craft ideas and recipes she shares in this book.

You might also want to check out Matthew Mead's website for patterns suggested in this book http://www.holidaywithmatthewmead.com/

Wordsalad?

What's A WORDSALAD?

A few years ago when we began this blog we held a contest to see what we should name it. The winner was "Wordsalad" and we have kept the name ever since then.

What is a Wordsalad? The Random House Dictionary has several definitions of "word". One that applies here is "a brief remark or statement". I also like "news or information", "assurance or promise" and "an argument or dispute". They all describe what we do here exceptionally well.

One definition of the word "salad" is, "a various mixture" which is perfect for describing the thoughts of the librarians and staff through our blog. Although our blog doesn't have a world wide following, I have had people mention that they read something here that I wrote. It can be challenging to write interesting things for people to read, but it often is more for the author to vent or to voice an opinion, than for the general audience at large. We do try and keep our readers informed about happenings at the library, new books, new services and author information (mostly in the form of death notices! from Susan).

So, if you are out there reading, let us know! We love to have comments, both verbal and online. It makes writing worth the effort if we know you are out there.

Thanks
Michele, Children's Librarian

Become a Follower

Google's had the option to follow blogs for a while, but we've recent added the 'Follow' gadget to our sidebar. What does it mean to become a follower? Simply this, by becoming a follower you'll be adding our blog to a list of blogs that you've chosen to follow. You won't have to come to our blog to see if there's a new post anymore - the title of the article will simply show up on your dashboard in the 'Reading List' area. If the title/start of the article looks like something you're interested in, then you can click on the link to read the article. It's a reminder and a time saver all-in-one.

We love to share library news, events, and issues with you through the blog and we love hearing from you when you have a comment too!

So if have an account with Google, AIM, Yahoo!, Netlog, or OpenID and want to stay up-to-date on programs, book reviews, new books, and all kinds of library news, just click on 'Follow' in the sidebar to get it set up.

Thanks! And Happy Reading!

Name the Blog Contest Winner

Congratulations to Holly Holbrook, the winner of the Brigham City Library's name the blog contest. The library received several fun names for our blog through this contest and in the end we had to put it to a staff vote. Names for the blog were put on a voting sheet for the staff to choose from (without the name of the person who submitted the blog name) and staff members voted on their favorite one. Wordsalad, the name submitted by Holly Holbrook, was the winner by just a few votes. Holly received a 1 GB digital audio player that is compatible with the downloadable eAudiobooks available to the Brigham City Library and its users through NetLibrary. The name Wordsalad has been displayed on our blog since Monday, 18 June 2007.

Library of Congress Blog

Blogging is everywhere these days - even the Library of Congress!! The Library of Congress turned 207 years old on April 25th and to celebrate the anniversary, they launched its first-ever blog. Blog moderator, Matt Raymond, titled the first posting "What hath God Wrought?", a reference to the first ever words transmitted electronically by Samuel Morse in 1844. Check out the blog at www.loc.gov/blog.
