Sue Hill, Library Director, was able to take advantage of the Utah State Library’s Professional Development Grants to attend two American Library Association pre-conferences in June at the American Library Association Conference in Anaheim, California. She attended:
"Eating Elephant 2.0 One Bite at a Time: Using the Read- Write Web in Classrooms and Libraries" and "E-Books, E-Kids, E-Flat! Three Trends Schools and Libraries Will Ignore at Their Peril."
Libraries are always in the process of change and even more in the last few years since the use of the Internet and the World Wide Web. I can remember when Brigham City Library was one of the first public libraries to access the Internet and that was before the World Wide Web. Now many of our children are growing up with computers in their home, Internet access and the world at their fingertips.
Our library has been changing in response to our patron needs. We have had a website for several years that connects to our card catalog and many information databases available for our patrons at home and in the library. We now have hundreds of audiobooks that you can download to your computer or MP3 portable player from your home. We have bibliographies to tell our patrons what is new at the library through email or they can be accessed on the web. We have a blog (web journal) where staff can keep you abreast of what is happening in the library.
While our library will still have books to check out and other standards of library service, some of the methods to providing these books will be changing. We are taking many unused reference books off the shelf, if they are current they will be put in the circulating collection. We will be adding to the electronic reference collection we already have over the next few years and less physical books will be added. We will also be adding science e-books that patrons can access from home or school. These e-books will be purchased through an LSTA federal grant made available through the Utah State Library. If these e-books are used successfully, we plan on purchasing more non-fiction e-books and less hard copy titles. Although, hard copy books will be part of our collection in the future.

393 eAudiobooks Added to Brigham City Library's NetLibrary Collection
The Utah State Library provided all the publoc libraries in the State 1200 eAudiobooks through NetLibrary. These audiobooks can be downloaded to your home computer and put on a MP3 digital audio player for portable listening or they can be downloaded to your computer for listening as you work or play online. The State paid for the adult audiobooks and we are pleased to announce that they have decided to continue this service for another year. Brigham City Library users have checked-out over 600 eAudiobooks since the state first started this service late last summer. 30 to 40 new titles are added to the collection each month.
We decide to expand our collection of eAudiobooks by adding the children's and young adult fiction to the collection. This provides 363 more titles and will be added to monthly as are the adult fiction. We decided to pay the Recorded Books fee to add these excellent titles. These titles will also be loved by adult patrons. In fact, I have been listening to a children's title: "Wizard Alone" by Diane Duane and I keep staying in my car after I park to try to listen to a little more. Try out these great new books.

Reading on a Deserted Island
Spring Break has arrived. Easter is coming. Travel season is upon us, and whether you are planning a trip to somewhere tropical or just wishing you were it's always fun to dream about being somewhere warm and lush. Which may bring to mind the popular daydream about what it would be like to be stranded on a deserted island. If you were stranded on a deserted island, what book would you want to have with you? Share your comments below. As for myself, I don't know what I would chose. I have a stack of reading near my bed at home from magazines, to children's books, to a books about Afganistan to a fantasy by Lackey. And these are just the ones I have started to read.
I'd would also to have my Creative Zen Nano player with me loaded up with e-audiobooks for my entertainment. I'd probably choose some classic adventure tomes like "The Three Musketeers"or "Robinson Crusoe" (What could be more inspiring...and long?) But I'd better have packed plenty of spare batteries! These eaudiobooks are available through Netlibrary and free for all Brigham City Library patrons. Check it out on our webpage http:bcpl.lib.ut.us.
