Heart and Soul: Reading Discussion On "Longitude"

The thorniest scientific problem of the eighteenth century was how to determine longitude. Many thousands of lives had been lost at sea over the centuries due to the inability to determine an east-west position. This is the engrossing story of the clockmaker, John "Longitude" Harrison, who solved the problem that Newton and Galileo had failed to conquer, yet claimed only half the promised rich reward.


Join Dr. Jule Rich, as we discuss this book dealing with the greatest scientific discovery of its time. Julie Rich earned her Ph.D. in Geography at St. John's College, University of Oxford, Oxford, England, her M.S. in Geography from University of Utah, and her B.S. in Geography from Weber State College. Presently, Dr. Rich is an assistant professor of Geography at Weber State University. Her current research interests include the world’s dry lands and climate change with research concentrating on ancient climates and environments. She has been trained in optical dating, a technique that determines the age earth materials. Dr. Rich has also recently conducted humanitarian projects in diverse foreign countries such as Rwanda (in Africa), Kazakhstan (in Central Asia) and Nepal (between China and India). Dr. Rich has traveled to more than 80 countries and lived for an extended time in eight countries. She loves the out of doors and enjoys sports like skiing, flying, hiking, wind surfing and scuba diving.
