Celebrate Earth Day!
For Story Time this week we talked about Earth and our Environment. I was a little worried that this topic would be over the understanding of our younger class but I did find some very simple books that brought it down to their level. For our toddler class we read Look for the Lorax (based on the character created by Dr. Seuss) by Tish Rabe, I Love our Earth by Bill Martin and Round like a Ball by Lisa Campbell Ernst. Our older class also heard Round like a Ball, and we added On Earth by G. Brian Karas and Earth Day by David Marx. For our Free Reading Time we added Peas on Earth by Todd Doodler. We sang Over in the Meadow from the CD Wiggleworms Love You by Old Town School of Folk Music and acted out the animal actions. Our older class did a matching activity and we talked about the different items in the game and how they are part of taking care of Earth. For example when one child had a picture of an aluminum can we talked about recycling. When another had a picture of wheat we talked about where our food comes from and when we had a picture of the sun we talked about how the sun helps us on Earth. We colored an Earth Day picture of a globe and some animals then I used the die-cut machine and made the picture into puzzle pieces. Then the children reassembled the puzzles and glued the pieces onto a piece of construction paper.
Next week: Birds
