Donations are a Librarians Friend?

I was looking at the msn webpage and saw an article about how a hollow book with a gun inside was donated to an Illinois library. We love donations at the library but this one was a real doozy! My guess is that the person donating the book had no idea of the true content. It looks to me like one of those fake rocks that you hide a key in or one of those fake soup cans that you use to disguise your valuables. Maybe grandpa died and the heirs were cleaning out his personal belongings. Who knows? Since the library that received the book/gun has a large volume of donations, they don't have any idea who the gun belonged to.

Fortunately, we have never had this type of book donated here at the Brigham City Library. If you want to donate a book to our library, here are some things to consider.

1. We don't want anything dirty, torn, faded, or damaged.
2. If it is outdated we can't use it. For example, those textbooks from your college class on computer programming circa 1985. These are best as fodder for your recycle bin.
3. Because of our lack of shelf space, we can't keep every book donated, for our collection. Those we don't keep, we put in the Friends of the Library book sale. Proceeds from that sale benefit the library by providing funds to make purchases not possible with our limited budget.

Thanks for donating gently-used, current titles.

Story Time Review

This week time has flown by and I almost forgot it was my day to post to the blog! In our Story Time classes we talked about the 5 senses. We read Senses on the Farm by Shelley Rotner, Nosie Rosie by Holly Keller, Touching and Feeling by Katie Dicker, The Bear Went Over the Mountain by Iza Trapani, and Yummy, Yucky by Leslie Patricelli. We played a guessing game with some mittens and a blindfold. I put them on a child and then handed them an object to see if they could guess what it was. We tried some scent jars to see if we could guess familiar scents like peppermint, orange and pine. We sang and danced to Sticky Bubble Gum from the CD of the same title by Carole Peterson.

For our craft we used some homemade scratch and sniff paint to paint on flowers that I had cutout with the die cut machine. We glued them to popsicle sticks. I got the recipe for the paint on Pinterest.com.  I sent home a couple of take home activity pages, one on Tasting and one on  A Smelling Tour of your home.

The Shape of Me & Other Stuff Story Time

This week we continued our theme of  "The Basics" with our weekly story time classes. We concentrated on learning about shapes. We read Perfect Square by Michael Hall, Mouse Shapes by Ellen Stoll Walsh and It Looked Like Spilt Milk by Charles Green Shaw with our 2 and 3 year old class. Then we added The Shape of Me and Other Stuff by Dr. Seuss, Circle Dogs by Kevin Henkes and Square Cat by Elizabeth Schoonmaker for our 3 to 5 Preschooler classes.

With our older classes we used the white board and I drew shapes as kids named some that the knew. We got typical answers like circle and square but also trapezoid and pentagon! These are some pretty smart kids :) We also drew butterfly and turtle shapes as we talked about everything having a shape. This got a little challenging to an art handicapped teacher but I managed to draw something that resembled a turtle. We took a minute to talk about things that change shape like water or bubble gum.

We used the shape drums to make a ton of noise and practice different ways to play, fast, slow, quietly, loudly etc. We also pulled out the tubing circles and played with them trying to see what parts of our body we could fit inside the circle. I love to have them place the circles on the ground and put both feet inside, a knee or elbow is fun too. My favorite, that always gets them giggling, is putting your bum inside the circle.

We played a musical chairs type game with shapes on the ground. As the children walked around the circle I played music. When the music stopped we drew a shape out of a hat and took away those shapes in the circle, soon everyone was trying to stand on the same 2 shapes. It was a lot of fun for the kids. I used the song Scat like That from the CD of the same name by Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer.

For our craft we did a tree picture with different colored leaves. I used some small craft punches to make different shapes that the children glued on. We had flowers, hearts, stars, apples, leaves, even choo-choo train shapes.

"Coyote was tired of being cold," begins this traditional Shoshone tale about the arrival of fire in the northern Wasatch region. Members of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation developed the concept for this retelling, in collaboration with book arts teacher, Tamara Zollinger. Together, they wrote and illustrated the book.
Bright watercolor-and-salt techniques provide a winning background to the hand-cut silhouettes of the characters. The lively, humorous story about Coyote and his friends is complemented perfectly by later pages written by Northwestern Shoshone elders on the historical background and cultural heritage of the Shoshone nation. An audio CD with the voice of Helen Timbimboo telling the story in Shoshone and singing two traditional songs makes this book not only good entertainment but an important historical document, too.
Sure to delight readers of all ages, "Coyote Steals Fire will be a valuable addition to the family bookshelf, the elementary classroom, the school or public library.
